MY PLEASANT MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS OR HANUKKAH
The Christmas I loved the best was 1997.The family was all together the night before when we had a special visitor come to our house. The year had been lean for all of us and the kids had all been very good.As a very special surprise we told them all that we were going to have an unexpected guest come to see them all.We had all the kids sit on the floor around the tree with there eyes closed and told them to think about who it could be.When we told them to open their eyes, well the looks on their faces made that the best and happiest year for all.The year SANTA CLAUS came to our house! He gave out gifts we had under the tree and even stayed to sing Christmas carols with us.The smiles left on everyone’s faces said that all would be good and as he left that nigh we all new it would be a good year for all.For this was the year Santa came to our house.

Try thinking of love or something.
Amor vincit insomnia.-[Love conquers insomnia.]
Christopher Fry
Over the past three months we have reviewed the deep concern surrounding the global growth of sleep problems and their medical implications, sleep hygiene and tips for sleep improvement.
In this final installment we will report on corrective procedures and ideas for intervention.
Sleep training is touted more and more as efforts grow to medically and psychologically engage this debilitating process.
Cognitive behavioral therapy attempts to “change the thoughts and behaviors that contribute to poor sleep.” According to Consumer Reports’ On Health newsletter. It noted CBT approaches may include the following: designating a certain time of day for addressing worries and concerns rather than at bedtime, along with mind-body techniques to relax and wind down; a set time to retire and rise with rare exceptions; installing light blocking curtains, playing soft music, or using a sound machine to block out noise.
Sleep experts emphasize the quality and efficiency of sleep over duration, especially where insomnia is the problem.Sleep efficiency is the relationship between time spent in bed trying to sleep and the amount of time actually spent asleep, in percentage terms.
Richard E. Madden, PhD, MSW gives the following example: you go to bed at 11p and rise at 7a but only sleep a total of 6 hours due to difficulties falling asleep and staying asleep, so your sleep efficiency would be 75% and stated as follows: Sleep Efficiency=6 hours Total Sleep Time (TST)=75% 8 hours: Time in Bed (TIB)
A good sleeper takes about 10 minutes to fall asleep; taking less than ten minutes to fall asleep indicates sleep deprivation or excessive sleep debt, those of us with sleep onset insomnia usually take longer than 30 minutes to fall asleep.
‘Don’t go to sleep let go to sleep.’This axiom is a version of AA’s advice ‘Let go to God’, reflecting the fact that one’s psycho physiological control is a passive step, based on ‘letting’ not ‘making’.
Relaxation is the key to stress reduction and most of us can learn to construct a peaceful bedtime atmosphere and routine and to utilize progressive relaxation techniques to unwind our psychophysical selves from our heads to our toes through a series of simple, silent commands. When combined with Basic Belly Breathing this is a powerful stress reducer.
Although insomnia has become a common problem (one in three U S adults) relatively few of us seek professional help.Recently researchers have reported on good results from harnessing the power of the Internet.
The December issue of Harvard mental Health Letter reports on a program called “Sleep Health Using the Internet,” or SHUTi, designed to use basic CBT tenet for insomnia. The program uses a “stepped sequence of lessons, information, sleep diaries, questionnaires, visual aids, interactive games, along with e-mail reminders and prompts to keep the subject engaged.”
As this final installment draws to an end I find myself yawning, distracted, lapsing into reverie, seeking what Shakespeare called “Nature’s soft nurse,” so good night and all the best to all of you.
